How long should the bandage be?

Decide for yourself. If your fist is small, then 3.5 m may be enough, and if you have a heroic fist, then 5 will be small. Of course, the method of bandaging that you choose affects the choice of size. Professional boxers prefer bandages from 4.5 m.

With the same wrapping method, cotton bandages need a smaller size than elastic bandages. Polyester is thinner than cotton, that's why it is. To keep the fingers, knuckles and wrists in place even more secure, wrap the arm in the same way a second time. This is where a long bandage comes in handy.

Most often this method is used by athletes who have already managed to “break” their hands and need more protection of their fist at the moment of impact. In the initial phase of the bandage, we use the folds of the bandage to create a special pad to protect our knuckles.

We fix it with a bandage and then repeat the previous version of bandaging - around the hand, thumb and other fingers, again around the hand. As a result, we have a bandage that imitates the tape that is applied to professional boxers before entering the ring.

Since folding the pad takes time and requires some skill, some manufacturers produce special overlays that imitate it. How to wrap correctly

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Thumbing through the bandage buttonhole. In this case, the fingers should be slightly spaced to avoid too tight fixation.
  • Triple wrap around the wrist.
  • Wrap the bandage at the bottom through the palm and three times around the palm.
  • Turning the brush, make a loop with a bandage diagonally of the palm to the floor.

How do you know if your hands are wound correctly?

If you wrap the bandages correctly, everything should feel comfortable. If you only hit the punching bag with bandages on, you shouldn't feel your wrist flex under the impact. Common mistakes:

Why do you need boxing bandages

The first and, perhaps, the most important thing for boxing bandages is to protect the bones and knuckles of the athlete. This will prevent fractures and cracks. Accordingly, the bandaged fist also fixes the joints so that the boxer does not knock out or dislocate anything. It becomes much tougher and stronger, you can hit much harder without fear of damaging your hand.

Secondly, after long work with gloves, hands start to sweat, namely the bandages absorb sweat. This prevents unpleasant odors and fungi from forming in the gloves.

How to choose material for bandaging

There are several types of bandages:
  • these are cotton ones that do not stretch;
  • elastic, respectively, which stretch;
  • bandage-glove or quick bandage.

Cotton bandages are durable and absorb moisture well. These are recommended for beginners who are just learning to tap. Unlike elastic ones, they will not tighten or transfer anything, if, of course, you moderately bandage your hands. The disadvantage of this type is that when the fist is clenched, the bandage is tightened, and when unclenched, it weakens.

Elastic bandages can be divided into two categories: polyester and cotton with an addition of elastane. The first ones do not stretch very much, they are soft and very pleasant to the touch. These bandages do not slip on the knuckles, so an excellent fixation can be provided. The latter stretch much more than the polyester type. But their minus is in their rigidity and density. They are recommended for experienced athletes trained in the art of taping.

There are also bandages-gloves. They are made of neoprene with the addition of a gel. This technology will better protect your knuckles than bandages. There are quick bandages without a clear fixation of the wrist, there are also with an additional two meters of bandages. The second model is the perfect combination: the hand is protected and fixed, its only drawback is their price.

How to choose the length

The most common bandage length is 2.5 meters. Holders of a large fist will do 2.75-3 meters. If you need to fix individual fingers, then a 4-meter bandage will do. But, of course, it is safer to check the bandage in place, using different taping techniques and levels of fixation.

How to wrap correctly

There are many ways to wrap a boxing bandage. It all depends on its length and on what part the athlete wants to focus on.

Taping can be conventionally divided into four parts:
  1. Wrist fixation.
  2. Fixation of the thumb joint.
  3. Fixation of the knuckles.
  4. Striking surface winding.

To begin with, a bandage is wound around the wrist, usually 3 or 4 skeins are enough. The bandages should not be wrapped too tightly, otherwise blood circulation in the limb is impaired.

The second stage is the fixation of the thumb joint. A loop is made around the thumb 1 or 2 times.

And then wrap evenly the wrist and hand, making the winding as long as the length of the bandage. When the bandage is fully wound, fix the end with Velcro.

This is the easiest and fastest way to wrap boxing bandages, and is used by both beginners and experienced fighters.

Another method takes a little more time because the winding is "started" through the fingers. This method is also popular, but beginners need some time to work out this type of winding of boxing bandages. The winding is similar to the basic version, but a winding is added between the fingers.

Make the initial stage of winding - a loop on the thumb, several windings on the hand, wrist, thumb and then winding the fingers, i.e. separate fixation of the hand knuckles.

There are 4 ways to do it:

The first way ... A loop is made around each finger separately. As in the picture above.

Many people here make the mistake of starting with the little finger instead of the forefinger. Next, a scroll is done on the brush, then the middle finger in a loop, and so on.

Second way. A twist is performed between the ring finger and the little finger, scrolling onto the wrist, then the bandage is wound between the middle and ring fingers, scrolling onto the wrist, then a loop on the index finger.

Third way. It looks a little like the second, but only in a different sequence, that is, from the index finger.

Fourth way.

It resembles the first, but after a loop on each finger, instead of scrolling to the hand, it winds around the thumb. This technique firmly fixes the thumb, excluding possible injury.

After all the knuckles have been fixed, you need to make an impact pad by a couple of windings of the bandage on the impact surface. If the length permits, you can make a cross tie and finally secure the bandage on the wrist.

How to check if the bandage is wound correctly

After taping, a mandatory check of the correct application of the bandages on the hands is performed. If during squeezing / unclenching movements you feel excessive tightness or, conversely, freedom, you need to unwind the bandage and rewind. An improperly taped fist can get sore during training or sparring, in which case you need to urgently remove the bandage to avoid injury or poor circulation of the hand.

Why bandage your hands at all?

Hands are a boxer's most important weapon. They are made up of many small bones and tendons that are easily damaged. Boxing wraps gather and hold your wrist, fingers, knuckles together.

Many people incorrectly think that this is just additional protection for the knuckles. This is not the case, there are boxing gloves to protect the fist. Bandages, in this way, tighten the hand so that the shock arising from the impact causes as little damage as possible.

If the hands are improperly bandaged, or there are no boxing bandages at all, then there is a high risk of fracture of the small bones of the wrist. Even if they do not break, then various inflammations are possible, which will not allow you to do your usual homework, type on a computer, hold a pen. How to bandage your hands

You will need a pair of boxing bandages. I like the 4.5m length, but shorter lengths can be used.

So, let's begin!

one. Place the loop over your thumb and start bandaging OVER your hands. In the future, always stick to the direction of the thumb.

2. Three times around the wrist

This provides support for the brush. If you have short bandages or large arms, you can do two turns.

3. Then three times around the palm

At the end, return to the base of your thumb.

four. Three X across fingers .

Now you need to draw an X in the palm of your hand with a boxing bandage that goes between your fingers. This part of the winding will allow the knuckles to be gathered into a fist, while protecting them from damage.

What are the bandages

Before learning how to wind them correctly, you need to decide on some important points. First of all, you need to choose the type of fabric that suits you. For this indicator, bandages are:

  1. Cotton. They are excellent at absorbing sweat and breathing well. Thanks to these factors, the skin does not shrink. If cotton bandages are properly wound, they will lie on the arm for a very long time (or, as the people say, “they will sit like a glove”). However, they have one important point - before you start winding them, you need to practice doing it.
  2. Elastic (Mexican). Natural and synthetic materials are used for their manufacture. They are an excellent retainer for the hand, which means they protect it well from injury. However, they have one huge drawback - they do not breathe, that is, they do not let air through. Plus, they don't absorb sweat well. When winding, it is important not to pinch the arm, as this leads to soft tissue injury.
  3. Bandage gloves. We can say that this is a symbiosis of bandages and gloves, so they cannot be completely attributed to one or another accessory. They are suitable for novice fighters, as they help save time on reeling. The boxer wraps up the bandages.

After you have chosen the material of the bandage, you need to choose the correct length. Novice boxers usually choose short lengths in the range of 2-3 m. Professionals prefer options from 4 m. Many athletes are of the opinion that elastic bandages about 3 m long and 5 cm wide are best suited for boxing fights.

How to tie boxing bandages: all the ways

There are many options for winding the clips. However, there are 2 main and simplest options.

Usual

We pass the loop over the thumb. An important point is that it is always threaded onto him. The bandage should be twisted around the hand. This is done from the outside. With the first turns, you need to strengthen your wrist well. Next, once again throw the roll over your thumb.

In the next step, the roll is thrown slightly below the thumb, and another turn is higher. Thus, the phalanges are captured. On the back side, the material goes crosswise, rotates on the wrist. Further, the last steps are repeated. The winding ends on the surface of the hand in the palm area, slightly below the 1st phalanx.

A little harder

The second winding option is called "Cross". It will protect your knuckles a little better. The loop, as in the first case, is put on the thumb. It is with him that the winding begins. The first turns are performed slightly below the fingers. Further, each of the fingers is individually bandaged. It's worth starting with the little finger. But these options are mostly used by beginners only. More experienced athletes use more complex variations.

Important! You need to bandage your hands with the right effort. Otherwise, blood circulation can be impeded. You may have to bandage your hand several times in order to find the very "golden mean".

For those boxers who have already had hand injuries, doctors and specialists have developed a "soft" winding. At the very beginning, a preparatory stage is performed (with other types of winding there is no "zero" stage): wrap the bandage tightly around your fingers, and remove it.

This ring must be folded lengthwise. The resulting pillow must be secured with the remaining length of the tape on the knuckles. The next step is to fix the bandage on the wrist with two turns, and then return to the base of the fingers. Further, each finger is fixed separately. This winding helps to reduce the painfulness of the blow for both participants in a boxing match.

Beginner mistakes

As already mentioned, improper winding can result in injury. The most common mistakes when wrapping bandages are:

  • folds - the risk of injury is minimal, but the skin is erased to blood;
  • high pressure on veins and nerves - because of this, sensitivity is lost;
  • bad winding - weak contact, because of this, everything creeps.

How to understand that you wound the bandage correctly? Most often, beginners make mistakes when winding a Mexican (elastic) bandage. They can easily pinch soft tissues. The fact is that with not even the greatest efforts, the tissue shifts, stretches. As a result, your hands can simply go numb.

The tissue should squeeze the hand gently, without interfering with making turns in the joints. When clenching and unclenching a fist, the fabric should neither squeeze nor hang too loosely. Only experience will help you wrap your arms correctly

What will happen if you do not tie the bandages

If you ignore the bandaging (or do it wrong), you can get various injuries and injuries. The most common are ligament and tendon ruptures. Dislocations and bone fractures are also common. After all, a bandage for our body acts as an additional layer of skin and muscles.

Another "popular" type of injury in the absence of (poor) bandaging is sprains. It takes an athlete at least 1–2 months to recover from such injuries. It is clear that no one needs such spaces.

  • Shingarts are not actually wrapped around the hand, they are used like fingerless gloves. This protection is more expensive than cotton or Mexican bandages. They are comfortable to wear, but do not provide wrist support. For this reason, serious boxers usually don't use them.

3. Wrap your wrists. Make three to four wrist rotations depending on the size of your hand and the level of support you want. This step should be completed on the inside of the wrist. Wrap without folds and make sure that after each turn the layers of the bandage lay on top of each other. If you find that you need to decrease or increase the length of the bandage, you should change the number of layers on the wrist accordingly.

4. Wrap the brush. With the back of your palm facing you, pull the bandage and continue winding around your palm just above your thumb. Wind three layers and finish on the inside of the hand near the thumb.

5. Wrap your thumb. Rotate around your wrist once, then around your thumb, and end this step with another turn around your wrist. Wrap the rest of your fingers. Start wrapping the bandage around the inside of your wrist to keep your fingers secure at the base.

6. Wrap the bandage from the inside of your wrist through the top of your hand between your pinky and ring fingers. Then wrap the bandage between your ring and middle fingers. And finally, the last turn between the middle and forefinger. Finish on the inside of the wrist.

7. Wrap your palm again. Wrap your wrist, then make another diagonal turn, starting behind your thumb. Repeat winding until the entire bandage is over, and make one last turn around your wrist.

Novice boxers need to know how to properly wrap boxing bandages. Without such protection, the skin becomes frayed and sore after a short sparring. You can find answers to how to properly bandage boxing bandages, as well as other simpler questions, in our article.

Method 1

This technique was used by boxers from the Soviet Union. Before you bandage boxing bandages, you need to choose the right tape that has the following qualities:

  • elasticity, that is, it should stretch a little;
  • the presence of a loop, which is needed for the convenience of winding;
  • length 4 - 5 meters.
  1. First you need to put your thumb through the loop. Along the outer side of the palm, begin to spread so that the loop does not strive to come off, but holds securely. For reliability, you need to make a few additional turns around the wrist.
  2. From the outside, slide a strip of stretch fabric onto your thumb from above, looping over it. Draw one loop around it, then again take the strip of boxing protection to the wrist, where we fix the fabric with an additional layer. Then we move on to the fingers.
  3. You need to start bandaging with the index. It is more convenient to do this by placing the five fingers apart. At the same time, carefully monitor the condition of the applied material: if folds appear on the canvas, they can cause chafing of the skin. This is especially true of the impact area.
  4. Winding is carried out no further than one phalanx. The boxing protection tape must be applied, guiding it towards the index, and then held between the index and middle. After that, the strip of canvas must be wound behind the index and returned to the outside of the brush, after which we fix the bandage with another layer around the brush.
  5. The next step is to carry out a bandage between the middle and unnamed, a turn around the middle and return to the outside, followed by fixation in the form of an additional turn around the base of the hand. In this way, it is necessary to bandage the ring finger as well as the little finger.
  6. After finishing with fingers, it is necessary to protect the impact surface from injury. To do this, from the little finger, the bandage should not be transferred to fixation, but directed to the shock zone, wrapping a strip of fabric around it several times. From the striking surface, the material must be transferred to the wrist area and securely fixed on it, blowing the remaining tissue there.

Be careful as you begin to wrap your hands with boxing bandages. If at the end the Velcro is turned so that it cannot be fixed on the base, then the elastic tape must be turned over on the inside of the wrist. The fist should be in a tight fabric cover, and in a relaxed state, the boxing protection should fit snugly, but not too tightly. This will increase the protection of the limb from damage.

Material for boxing protection of limbs from injury is stored rolled up. After the workout, the applied bandage must be removed and the strip must be rolled into a ring, placing it in a warm place to dry and smooth. Before tying boxing bandages for training, they must be wound into a compact roll.

Soviet technique of wrapping bandages

Method 2

  1. It is necessary to start bandaging from the loop. Before wrapping boxing bandages, it must be put on the thumb of the hand. Then slide the fabric down the inside of the hand to the wrist, where you fix the elastic band with one turn.
  2. Pass the bandage along the inside of the hand by the index finger, wrap it around it and fix the cloth with a loop around the wrist. Repeat the steps on the remaining fingers (only make two turns on the little finger). Slide a piece of cloth across the palm of your hand, fixing it to the base of your hand
  3. The next step is bandaging the strike zone. From the base of the hand through the palm, pass the bandage to the heads of the bones of the index and middle fingers, and then fix the impact zone with three turns of the bandage. It is necessary to lead the canvas so that a feeling of stiffness appears. You can check the correctness of the bandaging by clenching your fist several times. With a slight tension, the limb will not feel any obstacles. If the bandage is too tight, it will not work to clench the fist.
  4. Having strengthened the protection in the impact zone, transfer the bandage to the wrist and make a fixing turn. After that, wrap your thumb three times, check the tension of the fabric on it and do the banding. To do this, make several turns in the area of ​​problem areas, which are the thumb, the base of the hand, and the strike area. When the bandage becomes small, secure it to your wrist with Velcro.

Classical boxing bandage wrapping technique

These two methods for winding boxing bandages around the hands are the most common among modern athletes. They are simple and do not require any special training or a lot of time. When preparing for a fight or training, never lose your vigilance, because even a little sparring can bring problems in the form of a violation of the integrity of the skin and bones of the hands.
