You involuntarily remember that in the USA diskless wheels were also in vogue at one time, but now they are practically not found there.

When developing this model, the shortcomings in the previous models were taken into account and improved. So, in MAZ-5551, the designers finally said goodbye to the gear lever in the form of a scrap, which is present in all previous models.

In the 21st century, can you imagine! They said that this option is provided only in long-haul tractors, and it turns out that they do not consider dump truck drivers to be people. Let them try to ride on dusty construction sites in the summer heat with closed windows ...

Dmitry , also a metropolitan entrepreneur, works on his personal "ten-ton" MAZ-5551−02. His car was produced in 2014, was purchased for $ 37,000. Mileage on the odometer is 48 thousand kilometers. He is more loyal to MAZ products. He says that he has no illusions and does not expect to work on this truck for more than four years - the main thing is to have time to sell it “well”. But in the current realities it is difficult: prices for trucks have also dropped.

- This is the second MAZ, the first dump truck was generally terrible - it had to be constantly repaired. Why then bought MAZ again? What else can you buy for this money? Scania, KamAZ and even "Chinese" are much more expensive. Although I will note that the cost of servicing everyone is the same.

The original rubber “eats up” by 15 thousand kilometers, so right after the purchase it is better to replace it with Polish one.

Talking about "sores", the man bends his fingers on his hand:

- Rubber on the front axle "eats" after 15,000 km completely. And nothing can be done - a factory defect in the casting of the beam. Immediately after the purchase, I installed Polish tubeless tires, it takes longer to take care of. In principle, if such tires were installed at the factory, it would be better. The second point is the Zubr batteries. One was enough for me for six months, the second "died" a year later. It is useless to apply for a guarantee, they will find thousands of reasons not to change them. I bought Russian batteries and forgot about the problem.

Without additional treatment, truck cabins rot in 1-2 winters. "Antikor" should be done immediately after purchase.

Dmitry also noticed constant fogging of headlights during operation. He even disassembled the optics and sealed the headlights again, but this was not enough for long. And a checkup with foggy headlights will not pass.

Even traffic police inspectors know about the problem with the steering rod, and immediately after stopping the car, they check the serviceability of this part.

- I drive with the lights on for a couple of hours before the inspection, then they dry inside, and then they don't make any comments during the inspection. The longitudinal steering rod also has to be constantly tightened. Moreover, even the traffic police inspectors know this drawback, and if they stop, they immediately climb under the cab to check the thrust.

I heard that radiators often fail, my friend changed ten parts in a year under warranty. So far, this problem bypasses me. There are also many questions about painting - in two years I repainted the body four times, and immediately after the purchase I treated the cab with Movil, but I already see that it is time to paint it.

Dmitry withdrew from the warranty service after the first MOT - after the first thousand run it cost 7 million. According to the entrepreneur, this is a significant amount, while he is sure that he serves his truck better and better than the "servicemen". In general, according to Dmitry, if you follow the car, then for four years MAZ-5551−02 “departs” without any problems, but the new three-axle MAZ-5516 dump trucks are “unsuccessful”. But now it has become more difficult to sell MAZs - to buy a truck of thousands for 60-65 thousand dollars, and in four years it will not be possible to sell for 40 thousand, as it was a few years ago.

Valentin Viktorovich , driver of MAZ-5902A2, got behind the wheel of this car in 2009. He himself took the new truck from the factory, and before that he drove the old ZIL. Now on the odometer of his MAZ - 205 thousand kilometers.

- It makes no sense to compare MAZ with ZIL or "lawn" - there is a gap between them, - the man is sure. - MAZ is both more comfortable and more economical. I like it better! But in general, at our enterprise there is an unspoken war of opinions - ZIL drivers against "mazists". Some say that they will never sit behind the wheel of a MAZ, and I will never climb into the ZIL cab, I like my car more. Firstly, MAZ is more comfortable, and secondly, it is easier to control it - it is nimble and with a powerful power steering. You don't get so tired while driving.

At the same time, Valentin Viktorovich does not hide the fact that his MAZ also has many problems.

- On the technical side, there are no special complaints, these MAZs are driving here until they rot. But they rot quickly: there are problems with corrosion resistance, I will not hide it. We paint ourselves, cook. We are trying to somehow extend the life of the trucks. In our practice, there have been cases when new MAZ trucks after the very first winter did not pass a state inspection due to problems with the cab. Can you imagine? One winter - and the cab rusts so much that the inspection cannot be passed. From what metal they make it, nobody knows.

Almost all MAZ drivers call problems with radiators - a “proprietary disease”.

Of the serious breakdowns, Valentin recalls only the replacement of the clutch under warranty for 40,000 kilometers. But this can be attributed to the operating conditions - most of the garbage trucks drive around the yards. The rest of the problems, according to the driver, are insignificant: a leaking radiator (a man constantly pours sealant into it) and quickly wearing out rubber on the front axle.

A malfunctioning pre-heater can cause a car fire.

- Most cars also do not have a pre-heater. There were cases when cars came from the factory with faulty parts. But you can't joke with the heaters - its malfunction can lead to a fire in the car.

Colleague Valentin at the same MAZ replaces the sick driver, he himself drives a ZIL. At the same time, he cannot say anything bad about MAZ - "an ordinary car, but the suspension is very shaking." Nearby, behind the forest, the engine of the "Dakar" MAN was roaring: the Manovites were conducting demonstration runs before the Silk Way Rally at the Dmitrovsky car range. We were also invited to ride. But we had no time for that: we were waiting for a tractor that, on a rigid hitch, would carry off a loaded KAMAZ-6520 (brand new, after restyling), which died in the middle of a long ascent. Comparative tests of dump trucks - two MAZ, KAMAZ and the "Chinese" Shacman - were successful in full. Or failed? We repaired cars more than drove them, and by the end of the test, only two dump trucks remained on the move.

And the idea to compare dump trucks was born when the Rusbiznesavto company decided to show MAZ journalists with the body of the Avtomaster company from Naberezhnye Chelny (AR No. 13, 2011), and with it the familiar MAZ-5516 with the Mazovian body. We arrived at the landfill a day earlier, waited for the arrival of new cars.

And the first thing to do was to remove the handfuls of bolts and nuts left in the cabins after assembly (the most impressive bolt is one and a half fingers thick!). Testing the "Mazik" nine years ago, we just raked washers and bolts out of its cabin in the same way. Has nothing changed since then?

Then they drove the cars to the car wash - and could not reverse on the MAZ-5516. But since shortly before that a MAZ tractor (AR No. 5, 2011) had visited our tests, we immediately guessed what was the matter: there was no nut on the gear shift rod, and the rod simply fell out of the socket. We found two suitable nuts, turned them in and drove out.

The next morning we drive the dump trucks to the house where the presentation will take place. And then, ten meters before the house, the unfortunate traction is cut off right on the nuts. What to do? Other journalists are about to arrive! I saddled the gearbox, squeezed the drive parts and shouted to Dima Silin, who was driving: "Switch through my hands!" The car was parked - and fellow journalists did not notice anything. We just wondered why this dump truck should not be ridden.

And then, since the required part was not in the dealer's warehouse, they had to look for a welder. But there was no time left for testing, and we returned both machines "due to technical failure", agreeing to try again. If we only knew what awaited us in the future!

Who is who

And what if we add to these two dump trucks their classmates in the same price range? Rusbusinessavto found a KAMAZ-6520, and the Moscow region firm Spetsavtotekhnika provided the Chinese Shaanxi (now it is called Shacman). We will tell you who is who.

The MAZ-5516 dump truck (now with the A5 prefix) is well known to both drivers and mechanics. The motor is a well-deserved YaMZ-238, only modernized, with an index of 6582.10, the gearbox is also Yaroslavl. But here's what is curious: despite the popularity of this model, it is not in the factory catalog or on the MAZ website! Only an agricultural option and a wood chip truck.

Why? Apparently, because the model is frankly outdated, and instead of it, a more modern MAZ-6501 with a new cab is proposed. But it is more expensive and customers still go for the familiar model.

MAZ with body Avtomaster has the same design as MAZ-5516A5, except for the body: thanks to it, the car receives a new VIN and becomes formally Russian with the opportunity to participate in state tenders. The body itself is made in the form of a half-pipe (it is believed that the rock freezes to it less in winter, although the center of gravity rises), made more accurate than the Mazovian one, equipped with Italian hydraulics and a pneumatic system for switching the "body-street" exhaust. Moreover, when the body is raised, the exhaust automatically switches to the "street" (otherwise, in winter, a cloud of gases interferes with monitoring the unloading).

But this system is located unsuccessfully, under the belly of the car (oh, the pneumatics will turn sour in winter!), And the rear underrun guard is too low due to the presence of the coupling - for which we later paid.

KAMAZ-6520 is the model on which the plant is now betting. In the price list, it is presented in 15 modifications! With bodies of different volumes (from 12 to 20 cubic meters) and cross-sections (rectangular or "half-pipe"), drive axles KAMAZ or Madara from Hungary, with or without cabin restyling. There are even options that meet the Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards. Moreover, all KAMAZ-6520s are equipped with a 16-speed ZF gearbox made by KAMAZ.

We got the version 6520-26014-63 - with restyling, four-point air suspension of the cab (which other competitors did not have) and an engine. Isn't that a typo? Is common rail injection really worth it here? Exactly! Although the engine itself is a familiar KAMAZ-740, only meeting Euro 3. The body is clearly better welded than that of MAZ-5516 and the "Chinese".

The width and height of the cab are also the same for cars (2550 mm and 4000 mm, respectively). But the length of the tractor is slightly longer for KAMAZ (6350 mm versus 6000 mm for MAZ). The parameters of the total weight of the road train for the cars are also identical and amount to 44,000 kg.

As for the cabins, MAZ has it entirely of its own design, although it cannot be called a completely new one, since the cab from the previous generation tractor unit, rooted in the 90s, was taken as a basis, which has undergone a radical redesign. Designers reinforced the frame of the new cab, completely new facing elements, new pneumatic supports, more spacious tool boxes with external access.

The KAMAZ cab is nothing more than a redesigned cab of the Mercedes-Benz Actros of the BM963 generation, which has been produced since 2012. As you know, in Naberezhnye Chelny spetsialtro was built a new plant for the production of these cabins with a planned annual production of 55,000 units. The use of the cab from Aktros allowed KAMAZ to get the most spacious and highest cab in the history of its trucks with a floor-to-ceiling distance of 1980 mm and an internal width of 2270 mm.
